Life Skills

Life skills are positive and adaptive behaviors that make it possible for us to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life. Life skills enable us to secure our own well-being and become active and productive members of the community. Life skills are often taught by parents, either indirectly through example, or directly with the purpose of teaching a specific skill. Parenting itself can be considered a life-skill.

Sometimes, when families and relationships break down due to parental lapses, divorce, substance abuse or other risky behavior, we miss the opportunity to learn important life-skills that will help us to succeed in life. For this reason, Catholic Charities offers several life-skills classes to fill in the gaps.

Relationships have a profound impact on individuals, couples, families, friendships, communities, businesses and the world around us. For example:

  • Healthy marriages and family formation reduce poverty, child abuse and neglect, prevent costly social service interventions, and increase job stability.
  • Strong marriages are a major factor in raising healthy successful children.
  • Marriage is associated with better physical health, greater financial security, and more contentment in life.

Catholic Charities provides the following opportunities and resources for relationship assessment, education, and support for individuals, couples, families, and groups.

Relationship Workshops

Workshop Sign
Catholic Charities offers two relationship education workshops, led by trained facilitators, for groups of individuals or couples upon request. Relationship education is not counseling or therapy. Participants in our relationship education workshops learn tools and skills that they can use to transform their own marriage, relationships and communication with others throughout their lives.

Within My Reach® Within Our Reach®

Within My Reach® for individuals helps participants examine past or present relationships, their values, how family relationships impact relationship expectations, and what commitment and forgiveness mean to them. The workshop also provides an opportunity for participants to practice specific skills that can help them manage their relationships including techniques for effective listening, identifying healthy relationship behaviors, seeking a good match, staying safe, speaking for yourself, knowing when to take a time-out and problem solving. Workshops include individual work, group activities and small or large group discussions.

Participants in the Within My Reach® workshops may be single, in a dating relationship, or even considering marriage, but the workshop is designed for individuals, not couples. Participants can expect to leave the workshop with a better understanding about what they need, the healthy and positive characteristics of romantic relationships, and what they might expect from a partner. Participants who have completed the program tend to experience high levels of satisfaction with the training, significant increases in knowledge and communication/conflict resolution skills, and improvements in relationship quality.

Within Our Reach® for couples focuses on building the relationship skills necessary to succeed in marriage. The workshop helps couples to identify their relationship strengths and build on them with specific skills that support a safer, more stable marriage. These skills include: successful communication, conflict management, managing/developing support systems, commitment, managing expectations, setting and working toward goals together, knowing each other and modeling a healthy relationship that is safe for both people in the relationship.

Couples attend together and there is individual work (because you can change your own behavior, but you cannot change your partner), couple activities and group discussion. Marriage education skills are taught and an activity or practice time provides an opportunity for participants to put what they are learning into action. Key skills are reinforced throughout the multi‐week series of workshops and different strategies are introduced, so that couples can decide what works best for them. Couples are encouraged to practice the skills at home in real‐life situations and have fun together.

Both of these workshops are available upon request for groups of individuals (Within My Reach®), or couples (Within Our Reach®). Contact Brooke Hamlin-Lopez for more information, or to schedule a workshop.

CoupleEnergize your relationship! The PREPARE/ENRICH program for couples is uniquely tailored for each couple who comes to us with a desire to cultivate a healthy and long-lasting relationship---no matter where you are in your relationship, or how long you've been together. Over the last 30 years, the PREPARE/ENRICH program has empowered and energized more than 3 million couples.

The PREPARE/ENRICH program begins with an assessment that identifies your unique strength and growth areas as a couple including communication, conflict resolution, roles, sexuality, finances, spiritual beliefs, and more. After both of you complete the assessment, one of our professional staff members will meet with you to go over the results. Based on your assessment results, we'll provide 4-8 additional feedback sessions to help you discuss and understand your results, and learn relevant relationship skills based on your unique relationship.

This tailored approach is what makes PREPARE/ENRICH one of the most widely used programs for marriage enrichment, marriage counseling, premarital education and counseling, and for dating couples who are considering engagement.
