Backpacks, new clothes, bright yellow school buses, and the fresh smell of new books and notebooks can only mean one thing: It's time for school!

A fresh start in school isn't just for children. Adults who haven't finished their high school education can benefit from a fresh start, too. For adults who did not finish high school, completing a General Education Degree (GED) test may lead to a better job, a larger salary, opportunities for advanced education, and perhaps, a feeling of pride for accomplishing something that only 60% of high school students can do.

The GED test consists of four modules: Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math. In order to take the test you must be at least 16 years of age, and not be currently enrolled in high school, or have a high school diploma. You must also present a valid Kansas Driver’s License, photo ID, or military ID. *If you are under 18 years of age, both you and your parent/guardian will need to submit and sign the high school exit interview form. The cost to take the GED exam is $120. Here are some options to help you prepare for, and pass the GED exam:

Barton Community College GED and Adult Education Center located at 1025 Main St in Great Bend KS offers adult basic education classes and GED testing. Barton's small classes help you to prepare and practice for the GED test. There are no fees associated with your GED preparation instruction, WorkReady certification or Computer Literacy training; however, there is a one-time $50 fee for materials. Barton County Academy (BCA) is located on the west side of Great Bend at 5220 W. 10th Street. Barton County Academy offers a variety of services to students.  In addition to the high school diploma completion program, ESL classes are offered to help non-native speakers gain proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.  Students who have small children are welcome to bring them to the supervised playroom while they attend classes.  The BCA program also utilizes community services and resources to offer unique educational and recreational opportunities that meet the needs of students both in and out of the classroom. The Colvin Adult Learning Center located at 930 N. Kansas Avenue in Liberal KS, offers a variety of services for the student who needs adult basic education courses before he or she begins college classes. The center offers a Kansas State High School Diploma through GED Testing. The center offers English as a Second Language classes to assist the student who needs to improve his or her English skills. The center also offers a Work Readiness Program which covers employability skills, effective time management and life skills, and Citizenship preparation classes. Diploma 2 Degree is the first dual credit online program in the United States for adults who need to complete their high school diploma while also enabling them to earn college credits at no charge. This program is made available to residents of the State of Kansas over the age of 21 through a partnership between Lyons USD 405, Pratt Community College, eduKan, and CompuHigh. If you’re trying to get ahead but can’t find the time to go back to school to get your high school diploma then this may be the program for you. Not only can you take the required courses online at your own pace, but you can also earn college credits at the same time. This FREE Kansas State-funded program is for adults 21 years and older. It doesn’t matter where you live in the State of Kansas, you can enroll online for free and earn your High School diploma while online. No need to go to any facility in your area during business hours, this is a completely flexible program allowing you to go to class online via the Internet, any time, any day of the week as long as you enroll before the deadline or the program has reached capacity. The Dodge City Community College Adult Learning Center provides GED Testing each month in English and Spanish. Tests are given over a two day period once a month. Official GED exams are administered on the third Wednesday and Thursday of every month. Successful completion of the official GED practice tests (OPT) is required before being allowed to make a reservation for the official GED tests. The OPT is held on the second Tuesday of each month from 1:00pm-6:30pm. The combined five practice tests take about 4-5 hours to complete while the entire official GED test series takes about 8 hours to complete. GED Tests are graded by a web-based scoring service, and scores are usually available within 2-3- days. A Kansas State High School diploma is awarded to those who successfully complete the GED Tests. The Garden City Adult Learning Center is located in the lower level of the Student & Community Services Center, 801 Campus Drive in Garden City KS. The Learning Center strives to provide innovative opportunities that promote and help participants to successfully meet their educational and life goals in an environment that is committed to life-long learning. The Macksville Adult Education Center found a home at 417 N. Gilmore in Macksville, Kansas.  This is also the location of Macksville High School, but the center is easily accessible to the public with its location just inside the west front door of the building.  The Macksville site is one of two ESSDACK Learning Centers found in a district building, and the close proximity has fostered a strong working relationship with the school that benefits traditional high school students who need a non-traditional working environment.  In addition to the high school diploma completion program, ESL classes are offered to help non-native speakers gain proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. The Pawnee County Learning Center in Larned, Kansas is located a block from the main business district at 209 E. 6th Street.  Students working to earn their high school diplomas have their own computer and work area in the spacious main classroom.  An adjoining room is equipped with a Wii console for students who need to earn a P.E. credit.  Local students who attend at the center enjoy the camaraderie and family atmosphere, and virtual students from around the state appreciate the ease and convenience of working from home. The Stafford County Learning Center at 318 E. Broadway is located in a public school building.  However, the separate entrance on the west side of the building opens directly into the Learning Center for ease of access to students.  In addition to the high school diploma completion program, ESL classes are offered to help non-native speakers gain proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
