What is LIEAP?

Adequate home heating and cooling are a necessity of life. If you can't heat or cool your home properly, you put your family at risk for health and safety problems. The elderly, disabled, and young children suffer the most from poor heating and cooling. LIEAP is a Federally-funded program that helps low income households pay for heating or cooling their homes.

LIEAP is not designed to pay for all of your energy costs for the year, season, or even the month, and it's likely that you'll only receive help with your main heating source. If you qualify, the amount of benefit depends on the amount of your household income, the number of people living in your home, the type of dwelling you live in, and the type of heating fuel that you use. LIEAP cannot be used for any other utiltiy bills such as water and sewer, unless water is necessary for cooling, as in the case of an evaporative cooler. In some states, LIEAP funds can be used for weatherization improvements in order to lower your energy bills in the future.

How do you qualify for LIEAP?

In order to qualify for LIEAP, an adult living at the address must be personally responsible for paying the heating costs incurred at the residence, payable to the landlord or utility company, and there must be a recent history of utility payments towards the primary heating energy. Additionally, the combined gross income (before deductions) of all persons living at the address may not exceed 130% of the federal poverty level, as indicated below.
